Living in Indian Hills comes with incredible views, privacy, and access to the mountains. It also comes with a very real concern: wildfire risk.
This project started the way many of our Harden Your Home™ Program projects do. A homeowner reached out to us because they were worried about how vulnerable their home might be during wildfire season. They had already taken a smart step by installing a metal roof, but they knew the rest of the exterior might still be at risk.
Starting with the Harden Your Home™ Inspection
We scheduled a visit and performed our 28-point wildfire risk assessment through our Harden Your Home™ Program. The goal is simple. Identify weak points where embers, heat, and flames could compromise the home.
Right away, a few key concerns stood out:
- Combustible wood siding that could ignite from direct flame contact or embers
- Standard wall sheathing that offered no added fire resistance
- Unprotected attic and foundation vents that could allow embers to enter the home
Even with a metal roof in place, these vulnerabilities meant the home was still exposed.
Building a Plan for Real Protection
We walked the homeowner through what we found and discussed practical ways to improve the home’s fire resistance without overcomplicating the project.
The solution focused on three major upgrades:
- Replace the existing wood siding with a non-combustible option
- Upgrade the wall assembly with fire-resistant sheathing
- Protect all vulnerable vent openings from ember intrusion
From there, we built a scope that would not only improve safety but also elevate the home’s appearance and long-term durability.
Installing LP FlameBlock Sheathing
Before installing new siding, we addressed what sits underneath it.
We installed LP FlameBlock sheathing, a fire-rated treated wood structural panel designed to slow flame spread and improve a wall’s fire performance. This upgrade adds an extra layer of defense behind the siding, which is especially important in wildfire-prone areas like Indian Hills.
It is not something most homeowners think about, but it makes a meaningful difference when paired with the right exterior materials.
Upgrading to James Hardie Siding
Next, we replaced the existing wood siding with James Hardie fiber cement siding.
James Hardie products are non-combustible and specifically designed to handle harsh climates like Colorado’s. For this homeowner, it solved two problems at once:
- Wildfire resistance with a material that will not ignite like traditional wood
- Long-term durability against moisture, temperature swings, and UV exposure
The finished look gave the home a clean, updated exterior while significantly reducing fire risk.
Securing the Home with Vulcan Vents
One of the most overlooked wildfire vulnerabilities is venting.
Standard vents can allow embers to enter attics or crawl spaces, which is one of the most common ways homes ignite during wildfires.
To solve this, we installed Vulcan Vents, which are designed with an intumescent coating that expands when exposed to high heat. This helps block ember intrusion while still allowing proper airflow under normal conditions.
It is a small detail that plays a critical role in protecting the home.
The Final Result
By the end of the project, the home had been completely transformed from a wildfire vulnerability standpoint:
- Non-combustible James Hardie siding replaced wood siding
- LP FlameBlock sheathing added fire resistance behind the walls
- Vulcan Vents protected all vent openings from ember intrusion
- The existing metal roof remained a strong top layer of defense
Together, these upgrades created a much more resilient exterior system designed to withstand the realities of living in the foothills.
