Ember-Resistant Vents
Wildfire Vent Protection for Colorado Homes
Wildfires do not require direct flames to destroy a home. In many cases, wind-driven embers enter small openings in the exterior and ignite materials inside the structure. These embers can travel miles ahead of a wildfire and accumulate on roofs, under eaves, and around siding transitions. Ventilation openings are one of the most vulnerable entry points. Homes rely on vents to regulate airflow in attics, crawlspaces, and wall cavities, but traditional vent designs can allow embers to enter during wildfire events. As part of the Harden Your Home™ Program, Road Home Exteriors installs ember-resistant vents, including advanced systems such as Vulcan Ember-Resistant Vents, to help block ember intrusion while maintaining proper ventilation.
Why Vents Are a Major Wildfire Vulnerability
Ventilation is essential for maintaining a healthy home. Attics require airflow to regulate temperature and moisture, while crawlspaces and wall systems rely on vents to reduce condensation and improve air circulation.
However, the same openings that allow air to move through the structure can also allow embers to enter during a wildfire. Wind-driven embers can travel long distances ahead of an active fire, collecting near rooflines, beneath eaves, and along exterior walls. When embers reach an unprotected vent opening, they may pass through and enter the home’s interior cavities.
Recognizing this vulnerability, the Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code (CWRC) places increased emphasis on protecting ventilation openings in wildfire-prone areas. Vent protection is an important part of reducing ember intrusion and improving the resilience of homes located in Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) zones.
Common vulnerable vent locations include:
• Gable and foundation vents
• Roof vents
• Soffit and fascia vents
Because these openings connect directly to attics, crawlspaces, and wall cavities, embers entering through vents can ignite combustible materials inside the structure without visible exterior damage.
Through the Harden Your Home™ Program, Road Home Exteriors helps homeowners upgrade vulnerable vent openings with ember-resistant systems designed to maintain proper airflow while reducing wildfire ignition risks. Strengthening ventilation protection is an important step in improving a home’s overall wildfire resilience.
Defend Your Home Against Wildfires
Our Harden Your Home™ Program helps homeowners reduce wildfire risk by upgrading vulnerable exterior components with Class A fire-rated, WUI-compliant materials. Protect your property, meet 2026 resiliency codes, and improve insurability with proven structural defenses.
How Vulcan Ember-Resistant Vents Work
Road Home Exteriors installs Vulcan Ember-Resistant Vents, which are designed to protect structures from wildfire embers while maintaining the airflow required for proper ventilation.
Vulcan vents use a multi-layer design that combines stainless steel screening with a specialized aluminum honeycomb structure. This honeycomb matrix is coated with an intumescent fire-reactive material.
When exposed to extreme heat, the coating expands and seals the honeycomb cells, creating a barrier that helps prevent flames and embers from entering the structure.
The system works in two stages during wildfire exposure.
First, the metal screen and honeycomb structure help block wind-driven embers from entering the vent opening.
Second, if the vent is exposed to high temperatures, the intumescent coating activates and expands to seal the vent opening, reducing the chance of fire intrusion.
Key advantages of Vulcan Ember-Resistant Vents include:
Designed to block airborne embers
Heat-activated fire barrier technology
Maintains ventilation airflow
Durable metal construction
Engineered and tested for wildfire exposure conditions
Vulcan vents are available in multiple configurations so ember-resistant protection can be installed throughout the exterior of a home.
Ember-Resistant Vent Installation Through the Harden Your Home™ Program
Upgrading vents is most effective when it is part of a broader wildfire mitigation strategy. The Harden Your Home™ Program focuses on strengthening the exterior components most vulnerable to ember intrusion.
Vent upgrades are commonly installed alongside improvements such as:
Wildfire-resistant roofing that helps reduce ember accumulation on roof surfaces
Fire-resistant siding designed to improve wall system durability during wildfire exposure
Ember-resistant soffit and fascia systems that reduce vulnerabilities under roof overhangs
Because vents are located throughout a home’s exterior systems, installation may occur during roofing, siding, or soffit replacement projects.
Our team evaluates each home to determine appropriate vent locations, airflow requirements, and installation methods while maintaining proper ventilation performance.
