Vulcan Ember-Resistant Gable and Foundation Vents

Wildfire Protection for Siding and Wall Ventilation

Wind-driven embers are one of the primary reasons homes ignite during wildfires. These embers can travel miles ahead of the fire front and accumulate along exterior walls, foundations, and siding transitions. Many homes rely on foundation vents and gable vents to maintain airflow through crawlspaces and attics. These openings are important for ventilation, but they can also allow embers to enter the structure during wildfire events. If embers enter through a crawlspace or wall cavity, they may ignite framing, insulation, or debris inside the home. As part of the Harden Your Home™ Program, Road Home Exteriors installs Vulcan Ember-Resistant Gable and Foundation Vents designed to help block ember intrusion while maintaining proper ventilation for wall systems and crawlspaces.

Why Gable and Foundation Vents Are Vulnerable During Wildfires

Many vents are located directly within a home’s siding system. Gable vents are typically installed high on exterior walls near the roofline, while foundation vents are positioned near ground level to ventilate crawlspaces. During wildfire events, wind-driven embers often accumulate along these areas of the home.

Foundation vents can be especially vulnerable because embers frequently gather near landscaping, decks, and siding transitions before being drawn into crawlspace ventilation openings. Gable vents present a similar risk, as they connect directly to attic spaces and are often located in the triangular wall section beneath the roof peak.

Recognizing these vulnerabilities, the Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code (CWRC) emphasizes the importance of reducing ember intrusion pathways in homes. Vent openings are a key focus because traditional vent screens can allow embers to pass through and enter the structure.

Through the Harden Your Home™ Program, Road Home Exteriors upgrades vulnerable ventilation openings with ember-resistant vent systems designed to help block embers while maintaining proper airflow. Protecting gable and foundation vents is an important step in strengthening the exterior wall system and reducing the risk of wildfire ignition.

How Vulcan Ember-Resistant Gable and Foundation Vents Work

Vulcan Ember-Resistant Vents are engineered to provide ventilation while helping prevent embers and flames from entering the structure.

The design uses a layered system that combines airflow performance with wildfire protection.

Key components include:

  • Stainless steel ember-blocking mesh

  • Aluminum honeycomb airflow matrix

  • Heat-reactive intumescent coating

Under normal conditions, air flows freely through the vent to maintain attic and crawlspace ventilation.

During wildfire exposure, the stainless steel mesh and honeycomb matrix help block wind-driven embers from entering the structure. When exposed to high temperatures, the intumescent coating expands and seals the honeycomb cells, creating a barrier that helps prevent flames and embers from penetrating the vent.

This design allows Vulcan vents to maintain strong Net Free Vent Area (NFVA) airflow while providing wildfire protection.

Vulcan vents are also tested to wildfire performance standards and meet Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) requirements, which are used in wildfire-prone regions.

Installing Ember-Resistant Vents with Fire-Resistant Siding

Gable and foundation vents are often integrated directly into a home’s exterior wall system. Because of this, they are commonly installed during siding replacement projects or wildfire mitigation upgrades.

Vent upgrades may be recommended when:

  • Replacing exterior siding

  • Upgrading gable ventilation

  • Retrofitting older crawlspace vents

  • Improving wildfire resilience in WUI areas

Installing ember-resistant vents during siding projects allows the vents to be properly integrated into the wall assembly while maintaining proper airflow.

Road Home Exteriors installs vent systems that work with James Hardie fiber cement siding, helping protect the exterior wall structure while maintaining proper ventilation.
