Vulcan Ember-Resistant Soffit Vents
Protecting Soffit and Eave Ventilation from Wildfire Embers
Wind-driven embers are responsible for many home ignitions during wildfires. These burning particles can travel miles ahead of the fire front and often collect under roof overhangs and eaves. Soffit vents are located on the underside of a home’s roof overhang and allow fresh air to enter the attic as part of a balanced ventilation system. However, these openings can also allow embers to enter the attic during wildfire exposure. If embers reach insulation, roof framing, or debris inside the attic cavity, they can ignite the structure from within. As part of the Harden Your Home™ Program, Road Home Exteriors installs Vulcan Ember-Resistant Soffit Vents designed to help block ember intrusion while maintaining the airflow required for proper attic ventilation.
Why Soffit Vents Are Vulnerable During Wildfires
Soffit vents are installed beneath roof overhangs where outside air enters the attic. This intake airflow works together with roof vents to circulate air and remove heat and moisture from the attic space, helping maintain proper roof ventilation.
During wildfire conditions, wind-driven embers often accumulate beneath these roof overhangs. Because soffits sit in a recessed area under the roofline, embers can become trapped near ventilation openings where airflow can pull them into the attic.
Common wildfire vulnerabilities around soffit ventilation include:
• Ember buildup under roof overhangs
• Intake airflow drawing embers into vents
• Combustible debris collecting in soffit cavities
• Heat exposure beneath the eaves
Recognizing these risks, the Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code (CWRC) places increased emphasis on protecting attic ventilation openings in wildfire-prone areas. Homes located in high-risk environments must strengthen vulnerable exterior components to reduce ember intrusion and improve overall fire resistance.
Through the Harden Your Home™ Program, Road Home Exteriors helps homeowners upgrade these vulnerable areas with ember-resistant vent systems and non-combustible soffit materials designed to maintain proper airflow while reducing wildfire ignition risks. Strengthening soffit ventilation is an important step in improving a home’s resilience against wind-driven embers and radiant heat exposure.
Defend Your Home Against Wildfires
Our Harden Your Home™ Program helps homeowners reduce wildfire risk by upgrading vulnerable exterior components with Class A fire-rated, WUI-compliant materials. Protect your property, meet 2026 resiliency codes, and improve insurability with proven structural defenses.
How Vulcan Ember-Resistant Soffit Vents Work
Vulcan Ember-Resistant Vents are engineered to protect soffit ventilation openings while still allowing the airflow required for proper attic ventilation. When paired with ember-resistant soffit and fascia systems, these vents help strengthen one of the most vulnerable areas of the home’s exterior—the roofline beneath the eaves.
The vents use a layered design that combines ventilation performance with wildfire protection.
Key components include:
• Stainless steel ember-blocking mesh
• Aluminum honeycomb airflow matrix
• Heat-reactive intumescent coating
During normal conditions, air flows freely through the vent to provide intake ventilation for the attic.
When exposed to wildfire heat, the intumescent coating expands and seals the honeycomb structure, helping block flames and embers from entering the vent opening. The fine mesh screen also helps prevent airborne embers from passing through the vent before the coating activates.
When integrated with ember-resistant James Hardie fiber cement soffit and fascia, these vents help protect the roof overhang where embers often collect during wildfire events. This combination reduces the risk of ember intrusion while maintaining the ventilation performance required for a healthy attic system.
Vulcan vents maintain high Net Free Vent Area (NFVA) airflow performance, allowing soffit vents to continue providing proper ventilation while improving wildfire protection.
These vents are tested to wildfire performance standards and are commonly used in areas that follow Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) building requirements for ember-resistant construction.
Installing Ember-Resistant Soffit Vents
Ember-resistant soffit vents are often installed during soffit and fascia replacement projects or as part of wildfire mitigation improvements through the Harden Your Home™ Program. These upgrades help protect attic ventilation openings while strengthening the vulnerable roofline beneath the eaves.
Vent upgrades may be recommended when:
• Replacing soffit panels
• Improving attic ventilation performance
• Retrofitting older soffit vents
• Upgrading a home for improved wildfire resilience
Installing ember-resistant vents during soffit upgrades allows them to be properly integrated with soffit panels, fascia boards, and attic ventilation systems. Road Home Exteriors installs soffit ventilation systems designed to work with modern soffit materials while maintaining proper airflow throughout the roof structure and helping reduce the risk of ember intrusion.
