Vulcan Ember-Resistant Roof Vents
Wildfire Protection for Attic and Roof Ventilation
During a wildfire, wind-driven embers can travel miles ahead of the fire front. These burning particles often land on rooftops and accumulate around roof penetrations, dormers, and ventilation openings. Roof vents are essential for maintaining attic airflow and regulating temperature inside the roof structure. However, traditional roof vents can also allow embers to enter the attic during wildfire events. Once embers enter the attic space, they can ignite insulation, wood framing, or debris. Fires that start in the attic may spread before they are visible from outside the home. As part of the Harden Your Home™ Program, Road Home Exteriors installs Vulcan Ember-Resistant Roof Vents designed to help block ember intrusion while maintaining proper attic ventilation.
Why Roof and Dormer Vents Are Vulnerable During Wildfires
Roof vents are among the most exposed openings on a home during wildfire conditions. Wind-driven embers often land on roof surfaces and accumulate around ventilation openings where airflow moves air in and out of the attic.
Dormer vents and other raised roof vents can be especially vulnerable because their elevated position makes them a common entry point for embers. These vents are essential for proper attic ventilation, allowing hot air to escape and helping regulate temperatures inside the roof structure. However, without proper protection, these same openings can allow embers to enter the attic cavity during wildfire events.
Common roof vent types include:
• Dormer roof vents
• Box vents
• Ridge vents
• Gable vents
• Off-ridge attic vents
If embers enter through these openings, they can ignite insulation, wood framing, or debris inside the attic before flames ever reach the exterior of the home.
As part of the Harden Your Home™ Program, Road Home Exteriors integrates ember-resistant ventilation upgrades into our wildfire-resistant roofing systems. By strengthening vulnerable roof openings with specialized vent systems designed to block embers while maintaining proper airflow, homeowners can significantly reduce wildfire ignition risks and improve the overall resilience of their roofing system.
Defend Your Home Against Wildfires
Our Harden Your Home™ Program helps homeowners reduce wildfire risk by upgrading vulnerable exterior components with Class A fire-rated, WUI-compliant materials. Protect your property, meet 2026 resiliency codes, and improve insurability with proven structural defenses.
How Vulcan Ember-Resistant Roof Vents Work
Vulcan Ember-Resistant Roof Vents are engineered to provide attic ventilation while helping protect homes from ember intrusion and fire exposure. While roof vents are necessary for airflow, they can also become entry points for wind-driven embers during wildfire events.
These vents use a multi-layer design that combines ventilation performance with fire-blocking technology.
Key components include:
• Stainless steel ember-blocking mesh that helps stop airborne embers from entering the vent opening
• Aluminum honeycomb matrix that maintains ventilation airflow
• Intumescent coating that reacts to high heat
Under normal conditions, air flows freely through the vent to regulate attic temperatures and support proper roof ventilation. If exposed to extreme heat, the intumescent coating expands and seals the honeycomb structure, helping prevent flames and embers from entering the attic.
Vulcan vents maintain proper Net Free Vent Area (NFVA) airflow and are built with corrosion-resistant materials such as G90 galvanized steel and stainless steel ember mesh for long-term durability.
They are tested to wildfire performance standards, including ASTM ember intrusion testing, and align with construction practices referenced in the Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code (CWRC).
Homes located in Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) zones face greater exposure to wind-driven embers, making ember-resistant roof vents an important upgrade for improving wildfire-resistant roofing systems.
Installing Ember-Resistant Roof Vents
Ember-resistant roof vents can be installed during roof replacement projects or as part of a wildfire mitigation upgrade.
Roof vent upgrades are often recommended when:
Replacing an aging roof
Improving attic ventilation performance
Retrofitting a home for wildfire resilience
Upgrading vulnerable dormer or attic vents
Proper installation is important to ensure the vent seals tightly against the roof surface and maintains correct airflow performance. Manufacturers often recommend installing vents with fire-rated sealants to prevent gaps where embers could enter.
At Road Home Exteriors, roof vent upgrades are integrated with roofing systems to ensure both wildfire protection and proper attic ventilation.
